16 Custom Electric Winches
from DROMEC for SY Zero

SY Zero launched – 16 custom winches from DROMEC on board
A special moment at Vitters Shipyard: SY Zero has been launched. The 69-metre sailing yacht represents a new step in sustainable maritime technology. When cruising, Zero is powered entirely by renewable energy – and the yacht was even built without a single fuel tank on board.
16 custom winches from DROMEC
For this innovative project, DROMEC engineered and supplied 16 electrically driven winches.
Of these, 14 winches are used for hoisting and trimming the sails. The remaining 2 winches are used for hoisting the crow’s nest, with pulling forces of up to an impressive 18 tonnes.
Compact electric drive solution
One of the key technical challenges was the limited space available on board. The winches are therefore equipped with compact, flat EMRAX electric motors. This made it possible to integrate powerful and efficient drives within the limited available space.
Innovation through collaboration
SY Zero was designed to demonstrate what is possible when renewable energy, innovative technology and ambition come together. The project was realised with Vitters Shipyard, with exterior and interior design by Vripack and naval architecture by Dykstra Naval Architects.
On to the sea trials
Following the launch, Zero is entering the next important phase of her journey: an extensive programme of sea trials, during which her systems will be thoroughly tested in their natural environment for the first time.
For DROMEC, it is special to contribute our expertise in custom winch systems and electric drive technology to a project that explores new technological possibilities for the maritime industry.
We wish the entire team behind SY Zero every success with the upcoming sea trials!
